I read somewere that with the ATI 3.10 drivers you dont need a refreshrate
fix Tool in order to get a higher refreshrate in games in Win XP..
Right now I get 60Hz but cant go above in a game..
I have looked and looked for a option to fix this in the control panel but
no joy..If there is an option for this porblem let me know. If not, what is
the best refreshrate tool out there? I was using Rage3D Tweak, but if I dont
need it I dont really want to use it...Thanks..

I use a utility called reforce.

First I remove all the hidden and nonpresent monitor devices from device
manager; you need to mess about a bit to do that - type the following into a
cmd prompt.

Set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
Devmgmt.msc

And then view hidden devices - all the faded icons show nonpresent devices,
but be sure not to remove anything that you are not sure about or don't
recognise as old hardware- there are plenty of nonpresent, but needed MS
drivers.

Then I use reforce, usually on a fresh installation to fix the refresh rates
for various resolutions, works fine here... running most games at
1600x1200@85Hz, which is nice :-)

Dude I'd been looking around for a way to get rid of the 40+ different
instances of my monitor that were present in the registry, thanks.
Personally, I've given up on using ReForce, though I had heartily
recommended it for a long time and still think its an excellent
program. But it seems that several games have been coming out lately
that just crap out with any kind of refresh locking program. I can't
remember what game it was, but using Refresh Force, I had to play it at
60 Hz, which kind of killed the usefulness of the app. So I've been
using the setting found in Display
Properties>Setting>[Advanced]>Displays>[Monitor]-> Refresh Rate
Override. Unfortunately this has a maximum setting of 85, and my
monitor can handle 100+ Hz at several resolutions, but its fine for me,
I play mostly at 1280x*@85 Hz, so I'm good to go with that. Doing this
makes 1600x1200 unavailable too, it refreshes at 75 Hz for me.

Huh, Well I have been using Rage 3D Tweak for a long time and just
reinstalled it with the 3.10 drivers.. I am playing at 1280X1024 At a
refreshrate of 100Hz no ploblems in any games, and I didn't need to mess
with windows at all..
Please tell me why I need Refresh Force and to go through all the other
stuff?

Have updated to the latest monitor .inf file ?
Have you gone into Display properties > settings
and manual set every refresh rate for each resolution ?
Are you using 32-bit, 24 bit, 16 bit or lower color settings ?

Err, doesn't the solution I posted yesterday apply to your problem? It's
the message titled "ATI RADEON vertical refresh problem (60Hz)".

Hey if you don't run into any games that cause you problems with the
refresh rates locked, good for you. There are just some games out there
that don't like it.
Seems like you've answered your own question about what you should be doing.

Err, Not really Nikos, you see, I dont have that entry in my Registry,
Pluse, I am not about to go mucking about in my Registry and take the chance
on hosing my System..
Rage 3D Tweak does the trick just fine..
I was just hoping there was a way to do it in the ATI control panel...Guess
not..

Did you try the refresh rate override under Displays/Monitor that I
mentioned in my post?

Ah well, "users".... ;-)

The funny thing is, the documentation of my card says that there *is* an
entry for that, but actually there isn't. Lol.

By the way, you're too paranoid about modifying the registry. I mean, hey,
we format the HD and reinstall Windows twice a year anyway, don't we?

Too funny... Like thats normal. Some of us never do that. ever.

And the PC still works as it should? When I reinstall everything, I usually
notice a speed boost (mosty loading times) of about 30 to 40%. (I'm talking
about Win9x here. With XP the situation might be better.)
