Dan from DansData has written an editorial on his "LCD Theory" - worth a read if you find standard CRT monitors give you headaches, and funny to read if you have an LCD!

I was wondering why it is that so many people who upgrade from CRT to LCD monitors seem to like their new screens for reasons unassociated with their actual qualities.

Specifically, I wondered why LCD purchasers so often say their new screens cause them so very much less eyestrain.

(Smug-mode) Well, I think I'm supported there in my strongly voiced views elswhere in this forum on the weaknesses of LCD over CRT in the gaming arena...but anyhow, it is a very good article and one I shall be pointing several people to when they get all upity about their LCD. :D

I think this is pretty funny because everytime I go to a friend's house of a family member's, they always seem to be running in 60hz. It's pathetic (and a serious flaw MS needs to address in XP, and have partially). One friend even went as far as saying "well, it's not too bad because I'm gonna buy a new computer soon anyway". He'll have the same problem. :D

It's even sadder when people are all impressed, showing off their new Dells with a 2.8ghz P4 running at 60hz. *clap clap*

While I'm at it, what kills me even more is computer manufacturers who give you a 3ghz HT P4 and like a GeForce 4 MX or something like that. Sad.

One thing totally missing from the article is "radiation"! CRT is bad in that respect. Anyway, do not think that I will try to prove which one is better and which is worse. On this very forum I have mentioned in my posts that for gaming CRT is better and for static work like word processing LCD is better.

I guess before anyone buys a monitor, the choice would be to go for the one which is more useful for the purpose. I have an LCD in the office and a CRT at home. Both for different reasons.

There are many articles on the web which discuss the radiation issue and also environmental issue.

Punch in "CRT LCD RADIATION" (without the quotes) and you will come up with hundreds of articles debating this issue.

What you want to make a decision about which one to go for make an informed one! Know what you are buying.

I thought you would all like this news post :brow:

I played on one of the new 16ms TFTs and I was well impressed :D

Personally, I don't think radiation is an important issue anymore. Shielding and technology have advanced far enough that pretty much all the harmful stuff is blocked. It's kind of like microwaves. When they first came out, people were scared to use them.

Personally, I think that an aperture-grille CRT is still the way to go. I wouldn't go LCD quite yet, nor would I go back to a curved screen.

I think LCD will never replace CRT, and it'll pretty much be a technology that will be skipped over in favour of plasma screens or a similar technology.

Yes, they are. Sizes range from around 32" to 60".

Prices from around £3K to £15K

XGA and SVGA are two of the flavours they're available in.

How far back would you have to sit from your Monitor for it to make sense?

I'm thinking Movies and games..... sigh 8)

I cannot agree with you more! Eric lets hope we get to use the thing at a reasonable price in very near future.

Exactly a year ago I was wrong in my assumption. Plasma or any other technology is not in the run its LCD IN THE LIMELIGHT TODAY! Talk about predicting where technology is headed, how wrong we can be.
