Reformatting?

Please can someone help me! I just got a new laptop a few months ago and I
feel like I've already messed it up. I would like either like to reformat it
(does that mean go back to how it was?) or use the function (if it has one)
to go back to a certain date\time.
Will reformatting get rid of the programmes that have been installed? I
have Norton Anti-Virus etc and my parents would be mad if that had to be put
on again. Is there anything I can do?! I would really like to be able to go
back to a certain time if that is possible (i.e. day after all that stuff was
installed if possible!) I heard you could do this on another of my friend's
computers...or is this just a myth?
Can anyone help me? I would really like to 'wipe my slate' clean
(metaphorically!) Also - would reformatting or 'going back to a certain
time' get rid of all the documents I have created? Just want to know incase
I have to save them onto a disc...luckily there aren't too many atm.
Please can anyone help me!! The Microsoft Help program has nothing about
reformatting etc.

Also I don't have the XP disc! I really don't want to reformat it if
possible as I'd rather 'go back in time' if you can do that. *cries* my poor
compy!! I don't know why it got so messed up. Even if I delete everything
that I downloaded it will still be there in its memory right? Or is that the
best thing to do?
Plus my Internet toolbar messes up sometimes i.e. it won't show the Address
bar until I deselect and then reselect it from the toolbar right click thing.
What is going ON?!!

Hi,

You can use System Restore (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools) to
revert back to a specific date. Doing this won't cause you to lose
documents. You might however have to reinstall Norton if you go back before
the date you installed it.

You can also reinstall XP using either the XP disk or your restore disks. If
you do that, and choose a Clean Install from the XP disk or use the restore
disks, the computer will look just like it did the day you brought it home.
No personal documents, no Norton, no Internet connection, no Favorites, etc.
The hard drive will be formatted.
