While reformatting xp on an emachine t1220 i encountered
a problem in the form of - after it reformats the screen
freezes. If i restart it, it goes to a black screen. I
went into Bios and the cdrom is the first boot, but when
i go to boot from cd, it asks e for my A drive. I am not
by any means a computer wizard, but I did reformat my
dad's Win 98 no problem. This is a pain in my side and I
have reformatted it a few times and the same thing
hapens. Technical email support told me it was probably
a faulty restore cd and that I may have to BUY another
one for 20 bucks- I really hope it is just operator
error. Any help wouldbe appreciated.
This sounds like a hardware problem. If you properly set
your computer to boot the cd-rom first, and it bypasses
it and tries to boot to the floppy, then there may be a
problem with the motherboard, BIOS, or cd-rom.
Make sure that you have the cd-rom jumper's set
correctly. Also make sure that the cd-rom is good. Try
to boot to your dad's Win98. If it boots, you know the
cd-rom is good. You may also want to swap the cd-rom
out. But first, MAKE SURE THE JUMPERS ARE CORRECT.
Don't use auto-detect, set it to primary or master
(whichever your's is).
How do tell if it is primary from master?
If the cd-rom is the only device connected to your IDE
cable, it should be Master. If there is another device,
say a hard drive or cd-rom, remove that one and set the
cd-rom your using to master.
