Reformatting New Computer

I have a new HP A230N that cannot be reformatted and
reinstalled using the provided HP sytem and/or software
unless you want to reinstall everything that originally
was on the drive (which I DON'T want to do). It came
installed with WXPHome.

My question is this:

If I purchase an upgrade for either WXP Home or Pro, can I
use the cd from my copy(s) of 98SE or Mellinium as the
recognition source for the upgrade disk or do the upgrade
disks need to find the preceding OS on the hard drive? I
know when upgrading through Millenum, I could simply use
the disc of the earlier OS when I reformatted and
reinstalled.

I want to repartition the drive into one active partition
and do a clean install, not an upgrade overlay.

Thanks in advance.

Harry,

As long as you do not have the copy of Windows 98 or ME that you intend to
use as the qualifying media installed on any other PC then you can do what
you propose.

If your PC is brand new, then installing another OS may well invalidate
the guarantee.

Mike,

No, both 98SE and Millenium have long since been replaced
and I simply kept the disks.

The truy infuriating issue is that I have to buy a second
copy of WXP since there is no way to use the OEM version
from HP that I already paid for. That was HP's ultimate
suggestion after several days of back and forth e-mails.

If only Franz Kafka were still alive to write a short
story about this!
