I am trying to reformat my hard drive and reload Windows XP Home. The
Windows XP disk will not start. I went into setup and changed the setting to
booth from the disk but it still will not booth up. What can I do to be
able to booth from the disk and reload Windows? Will I have to use a Window
98 booth up disk, reformat the disk, then load win 98...then use my Wix XP
Disk?? Thanks

You are trying to format and install Windows XP anew...

If you have a valid Windows XP installation CD, you should be able to boot
from it. The BIOS setting has to be set to boot from CD/DVD, then you have
to watch it and "Press any key to boot from CD..." when it asks.

What type of CD do you have (Windows XP)?

The CD is good. I bought the CD a few years ago. I loaded WIN Xp using
this disk before while I had Win 98..so the program works. I did change the
BIOS but I did not see the message about Press any key to rebooth. It is a
CD that I bought from a computer store..original copy
Thanks

If you can not boot from the XP disk then try the XP floppies (make sure you
get the right set).

How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks

Are you sure it is a bootable CD? IsoBuster will display the information if
it is bootable.

Make the CDROM the first boot device in the Bios
If you have more than one CD/DVD drive make sure the one you are using is
the first one to be booted. Some BIOSes have a separate menu where you have
to choose the boot order of CD/DVD drives separately.

Next possibility is a bad CDROM drive that can't read the boot record of the
CD. Then there's a possibility of dust or dirt on the CD.

You could also get a Dos boot disk that loads CD ROM drivers and then run
Winnt.exe from the CD to start Setup. However that option doesn't let you
reformat since it needs the hard drive to load setup files before it can get
started.
