Hi I was wondering if anyone knew how to reformat a hard
drive in Windows XP. I tried to do it through dos but I
can't format a drive I'm working on, would it work if I
could restart in dos-mode, and if so, how can that be
done in XP? Any help is greatly appreciated. Jon

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary to
partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow Windows XP
to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your omputer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website of
the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any available
Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter and audio drivers.

Question. What drive are you attempting to format? If it is the C: drive
then you intend deleting windows xp and all other files. I then assume you
want to reinstall xp. If this is the case it can all be done from the xp cd.

1/Insert xp cd into cd-rom and reboot machine
2/Setup will begin and start loading files into memory
3/XP will search your drive to see if any operating systems are on it
4/it will find one
5/you will be asked if you want to Repair or Install a new copy
6/choose Install new copy
7/you will be asked where you want the new copy to be installed. Select the
C: drive
8/on the next screen the option 'leave file system as it is' should be
highlighted. Change this by sleecting format in fat32 or, if you prefer,
ntfs file system
9/your hard drive will reformat
10/after reformatting xp will continue to install as normal

hope this helps
