I have Windows 2000 and I need to reformat my hard drive.
WHen I go to My COmputer, right click c drive, click
format, and click ok, I get an error message that says
Windows cannot format this drive. QUit and disk utilities
or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure
no window is displaying the contents of the drive.

As far as I know, no utilities or programs are using the
drive.

dawn. Are you aware that if you format your drive you will
lose everything that is on the drive. Also I think you
can't format the drive if you are using the partition that
your boot information is on to eliminate itself.

Uhhhh....... Windows is using that drive......
That's where Windows lives is on the C drive.
Windows IS the contents of the drive.
Formatting nukes all the files on the drive.
I don't think you're going to be able to pull the rug out from under
Windows by killing it off while you're using Windows to format the
drive that you're killing off.

You are aware that formatting the drive will lose you every single
file, email, program, picture, joke, movie, address, phone number,
EveryThing you have on there that is not backed up somewhere else?

Do you have a Windows 2000 install disk to put Windows back on the C
drive after everything is gone?

Why? Is there some problem you haven't told us about? Your (pardon me)
naivete about computers leads me to believe that you've decided to do
something you probably should not do. So tell us more.

BTW (By The Way):
a) you can't reformat the drive on which W2K resides. (You could do this with
DOS, but Microsoft has - very wisely - chosen to prevent W2K from destroying
itself.)

b) if you reformat, you will lose all everything on that drive.
