I have been running XP for about a year, and enought quirky problems keep
cropping up, so I am planning to reformat my C: drive and reinstall XP. This
machine has XP installed as an upgrade over Windows 98. My questions: should
I go the same route when I reformat (98, then XP upgrade)? Should I purchase
a full copy of XP home, or is it worth the difference in cost to go whole
hog and purchase a full copy of XP pro? I plan to keep this computer for at
least the next 4 to 5 years, and want a good stable platform which will give
me minimal problems over the long haul.

You do not need to install 98 first. The upgrade version of XP will ask you
to insert your 98 CD as proof that you qualify for upgrade pricing. Aside
from that, it's exactly the same as the full version CD.
