I'm about ready to reformat my hard drive with XP, but
I've been told to unplug everything from my machine
except the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Does it matter
and why did they tell me to do so from Gateway?

I think I've had reinstalled machines before and never
had unplugged everything like that.

Sounds like a little paranoia on their part. Formatting and installing an OS
really doesn't need to have all peripherals disconnected
Cheers Doug

I just did the same job on mine, and unplugged nothing. Received
instruction from CAREY FRISCH who is a MVP person on this board. She also
recommended unplugging everything, but that sounded a bit unnecessary and
like a lot of trouble.
1. set BIOs so CD is first bootable device
2. Insert XP and reboot machine.
3. Boot from CD -- follow instructions
4. Recommended format is NTFS if not already
Install and head to the Microsoft XP site for about 75 "Critical Updates".

The unplugging devices not needed to boot is a technique people use if one
of those devices, or its drivers, is causing the install to fail - do you
think that is likely to happen?
