Hi, Chris.
Just boot from the WinXP CD-ROM and follow the prompts, including the very
early one that offers to partition and/or format your HD.
You COULD boot from the WinME boot disk into MS-DOS and use FDISK and
Format.exe - but that is the long way 'round. For several reasons, it's
best AND easiest to let WinXP Setup do the whole job.
As you probably know, formatting the drive will wipe out everything, so be
sure you backup your data somewhere (floppies? CDs?) before you begin.
Don't bother backing up WinME. And don't bother to backup your application
programs; you'll need to install those from the original media after you get
WinXP installed.
Before you go online with WinXP, get your firewall turned on and a good
antivirus in place, then visit Windows Update to be sure you have the latest
Service Pack and later Hotfixes to protect you from all the malicious stuff
on the Internet.
