referencing 1 cell to another

I need to have a cell in workbook 1 be equal to the value currently in a certain cell in workbook 2

Any help is appreciate

put this formula in the cell on sheet 2

=Sheet1!a1

this will link that cell to A1 on sheet 1

one good way to learn how to do this is at the = sign open the other
workbook>click on the cell>hit enter.voila.
Now you can close the source workbook and still get the answer.
 
I have tried this, but it doesn't seem to be working as I expected

Will it work when referencing a cell that's value is determined by a formula

As simple as possible -

WB2 has a formula in cell A2.
You want the result of this formula to display in WB1, cell A1.

You can go forwards or backwards and obtain the same results.

Don's suggestion is to start with WB1, cell A1.
Enter equal sign (=) in A1, and then navigate to WB2.
Click in cell A2, and simply hit <Enter>.

Going in the other direction uses more keystrokes,
Start in WB2, right click in A2, and choose <Copy>.
Navigate to WB1.
Right click in A1, and choose "PasteSpecial",
Then click in the "PasteLink" button.

With either procedure, the results are identical in WB1, cell A1 !

I have tried this, but it doesn't seem to be working as I expected.

I have tried both methods. Neither works

Don's method is how I have always done this, but I now follow these instructions as written, but when I hit "enter' after clicking on the respective cell in WB2, the cursor moves down 1 cell and there is no change in the cell in WB1

I tried the process in reverse as suggested, and it did yield a result, but the sum function will not include the number in the calculations

Any help? Am I doing something incorrectly.
