Under the folder WINNT I have 119(!) (hidden) folders, named
"$NtUninstallKB820888$" and the likes with a total of 340 MB. Properties of
the contents A, C. (What is C?)
What is this, can I delete these?

They are winupdate removal files, if you delete them you will no longer be
able to uninstall the updates, that appear in Add/Remove
If you are happy with that delete them, or delete the oldest first

These folders contain the files and information necessary to remove
hotfixes (Windows Updates) that you have applied to your computer.
Sometimes these updates cause problems and they need to be removed,
these $NtUninstallK######$ contain the uninstallation information.
These folders are safe to delete but you should keep them for about a
week or so after you install hotfixes, just to make sure that the hotfix
doesn't cause problems and that it won't need to be removed.

Once you delete them, you may have to manually cleanup the registry to
remove the extraneous information contained in there pertaining to each
Uninstall Hotfix.

So is there a cleaner way to remove this, so that the register is updated
too? Apparently MS doesn't mind wasting hundreds of MB space...
Are there any other places to look for junk on the HD, apart from temp
folders?

Dont believe all the stories youve heard about cleaning/optimising the
registry.
If you want to use a registry cleaning program, go ahead, but ensure you
know how to undo what it has done when the problems occur, and your sys
fails.
