Reducing timeout setting

During peak hours it takes many tries for me to logon to my ISP
(bellsouth.net). Each time I try, it dials, gives the message that it is
submitting my password and username, and then times out with the message
that the port is not connected.

I reduced the time between redials from 60 seconds to 10 seconds, but I
cannot find out how (or if) I can reduce the 60 or so seconds that it just
sits there before timing out with the port not connected. (I cannot cancel
out of the connection try during this time. It just sits.)

Is there any way to reduce this time in the penalty box?

IIRC it's a MODEM setting that determines the timeout for determining a
failed connect. In other words the MODEM will "cycle" thru the
"negotiation" portion for "60 sec" and if no carrier detect, it reports
back and resets. The "dialer" then starts it's countdown for a re-dial
attempt. So, the answer is, read the modem documentation for the
"connect in x seconds" setting.
