Reduced video quality after editing

I captured a short 5 minute clip from my mini-DV using firewire to a DV-AVI
file using MM2. I trimmed the video and saved it to an AVI file (which took 3
or 4 minutes to save) and it plays smooth as glass. However, if I add any
video effects to the timeline, it then takes about 35 to 40 minutes to save
to an AVI file, and the video comes out "choppy". Can anyone enlighten me?

Hello,

First, the rendering of a video is not time dependent. This means that
provided you satisfy all other requirement the video WILL be created
whether you own the slowest machine in the world or the fastest...the
obvious result of having a slow machine is that even short videos can take
quite a long time to render.

The result of having two or more EFFECTS on one video clip is dramatic no
matter how fast your machine is because Movie Maker has to render the first
effect and then render the result with the next effect until all effects
have been applied.

The consequences of doing that to a clip that is also involved in a
transition is obvious...the Transition has to be recalculated each time
based on which frame it is applied to but only after that frame has been
coded with the previously mentioned effects....a very rough guide might be
if one frame equals one unit of processing time and the application of one
effect or transition is two units of time (this is rough remember) then for
one frame that has two effects and one transition that one frame would need
7 units of time to process it !!! Heavy Stuff ... So that takes care of the
time issue.

A video being choppy is a little hard to diagnose....it may be that if you
do have a slow machine and if you have never properly defragmented your
hard drive OR, if your hard drive is not running at its best data transfer
rate then the problem is your machine and not the video. The first question
to ask is Does your original video clip play with no problems at all? AND
is it the same frame size as the resulting video....meaning if the original
is 720 x 576 is the result also 720 x 576 ?

To properly defragment your hard drive go to www.raxco.com and get the
trial version of PerfectDisk 7, install it and get it to do an aggressive
defragment of your drive(s) If you need help with that do please ask. For
help on Hard Drive set-ups go to the tutorial on my website and have a
read....you may discover that the data transfer rate is messed up...or you
may find that your DVD or CD drive is using the same ribbon cable as your
hard drive (That's a big NO NO)

If none of the above helps out do please say so
