Reduce Powerpoint File Size

I recently broke up a 10 Meg PP presentation into 6
smaller presentations. The sum of the sizes of the 6
presentations was 3 times larger than the original (31
Meg).

I have tried all of the posted instructions on how to
reduce the size including removing the fast saves feature,
removing graphics content from the slide master, inserting
a blank slide in the front, turning off auto preview
functions, etc.

The problem is, PP is saving some kind of extraneous
information. How can the sum of the parts be three times
as big as the original whole?

Paul,

What's on the "slide master / notes master / handouts master" ?

If there is a 3 meg image on the slide master.....then splitting the pres into 6 individual files... could be the cause
of this.

I already tried that. I removed all extraneous graphics
from the slide master. This reduced the size of the files
only 200kb. I was able to reduce the original 10 Meg file
to 6.7 Meg by creating a new minimal slide master of 230kb
in size. I then put both files in slide sorter view and
moved each slide from the 10 Meg file to the new file.
When I saved the new file it was 6.7 Meg.

This is not your normal "I have too many large graphics in
the presentation" problem. There is something very
bizarre going on in this original 10 Meg file. If you
have any further thoughts they would be appreciated.

doubt that this is any help but here are some test results from my PC
ppt 2002 10.4205.4219) SP2
windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP4
I took a 350 slide file 7.07 MB (7,422,464 bytes) deleted the bottom
half of the slides did a save as and then repeated for the top half.
I now have two files:
part1 5.42 MB (5,693,952 bytes)
part2 1.88 MB (1,975,296 bytes)

a little bigger than the original but not by the factor you are talking
about.

HTH and good luck

Paul,

Is there anything "off the slide area" / "off the page"

Is there any of those "new fangled comments" that people can add to the file?

What happens if you create a new blank presentation
Then insert > slides > from file

a slide at a time...saving in between each slide and noting the file size?

Is it one particular slide that's doing the damage?

[There is nothing off the slide area]

[There are no comments]

a slide at a time...saving in between each slide and
noting the file size?
[The results are the same as when I created a new
Master and title slide template and bringing the slides in
from the larger presentation in slide sorter view. The
only difference is that I lost all of the formatting from
the original slide. This formatting, which included
graphics, accounts for only a little over 200Kb of info.]

Is it one particular slide that's doing the damage?
[There are a few large slides that have a lot of
graphics but that isn't the problem. If I take the
original 10 Meg Presentation and save each chart
individually I have a baseline 4Meg file. I took the
single title slide and deleted the slide so that the
presentation had no slides. I saved the file and the base
file with no slides was 4 Meg. I took that base file and
deleted all of the graphics in the Slide Master and Title
Master and resaved it. The baseline file with no slides
and no graphics was still 4 Meg. Exactly what information
could this thing be saving?

After turning off Fast Saves, have you resaved the presentation under a new
name?

Have you checked for embedded fonts?

Are you by chance saving for backward compatibility with ppt95? This will
increase your filesize dramatically.

This method doesn't seem to be working...My file still doubles in size, without
making any modifications, even after "Save As."

No...working in PPT2002, and saving as a presentation

What about the review features?

See the last two points here, if you haven't already done so:

Why are my PowerPoint files so big? What can I do about it?
