Hi
I've just reformatted my PC and installed WinXP Home /SP2, and when I use
the Windows update link on the start menu the page displays the following:

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or
later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer
Downloads website.

But I am using Microsoft Internet Explorer V.6 and was expecting to see the
usual update page! And if I use the link to upgrade, it offers IE 6 SP1
which isnt for me, I'm at a loss now of what to do to get to the usual
updates page.

Hi

I followed the link and was confused by what (RTM) meant. So could someone
enlighten me on:

*What exactly does release to manufacturing (RTM) (non-beta) version of
WinXP mean?

*or (RTM) version of IE?

My computer came with WinXP Home pre-installed, with a product recovery disk
(OEM)
I believe, and that is what I installed again after reformatting and adding
SP2. I tried installing IE6 SP1 even though I thought it wasn't the
solution, but anyway it gave a message saying I had another operation
pending and needed a reboot before installing, and even after a reboot it
still stated the same on another try.
I also removed a registry entry to no avail and then restored it, as well as
trying a reg update to resolve an issue when KB896688 has been installed.

I use Sygate personal firewall pro and checked in the applications field to
see if anything referred to windows update and couldn't find anything
obvious there that might help me see if the firewall was allowing the site
to be accessed, if someone else uses Sygate and could
let me know how this would be worded in the application field so I could
check it or add it, then that would be a great help

RTM = Release To Manufacturing version.

This usually means that this is the version that the software publisher
(Microsoft) has seen to the CD stampers. This is/will be the version
"sold"/released to the general publish (not the Beta tester!).

Windows Update site now requires at least SP1 to be installed for it to
work. It seems that it can not see which Service Pack (SP?) is installed on
your PC. You may have to re-install the Service Pack 2.

It means sold commercially. If it was on a PC bought from a reputable
manufacturer, or if it was on a disk you purchased legally, and it's
_not_ labeled Beta or Preview or anything like that, then it's RTM.

Thanks
