Steve

I have a windows NT4.0 server that has a lot of data
and shares setup on it. The users that use this box are
on it 24/7. I am in the process of building a new windows
2000 server and trying to come up with the easiest way
possible to migrate the users to the new server. Can I
just build the new box, copy the shares and then via dns
redirect the end users to point to the new server? How do
I do this? Thanks in advance.

Not a DNS question.....

You can copy the data over with robocopy (use the /SEC switch to copy
permissions) - for the shares, you can export/import some stuff in the
registry if you don't want to recreate them, but I don't have them handy
right now but someone else will surely post it....

Note - there will be downtime while you do this.

Once you've moved everything over, change your login scripts to point to the
new server name.
