It doesn't sound like spyware to me, but some of the previous responses
are very amusing!

I think your DNS server was responding slowly, and when you typed in
www.microsoft.com it didn't get back quickly enough with a
corresponding IP address.

If it can't get a response from the DNS server, IE will automatically
fill in the "www" and some common extensions (.com, .org etc.) for you
in an attempt to get to the page you actually "want". So when it can't
find "www.microsoft.com" it'll try looking for
"www.www.microsoft.com.com" etc.

Try typing "eBay" in your browser and ie will (intelligently?) work out
that what you really mean is "http://www.ebay.com" and will load eBay
up for you.
