Many of the graphics or photographs appear as a red x
instead of the photograph on sites accessed on the
internet. Can you please advise what to do; I am running
XP

Well known bug in all internet browsers that runs using IE engine. Just try
Mozilla Firebird and you'll never see those red X-es again...

What exactly is this "well known bug"?

What does Firebird display in place of the red X for images it fails to
retrieve?

I knew someone will find himself offended by this. Well known bug is a well
knows bug. Million people reported situations like that. Would you call it
normal ? I don't think so...

Nothing but picture itself. It never fails... if you tried it, you would
know. Don't hate something you don't know very well... open your mind people
!

Offended? Goodness but you're able to read a lot into a simple question!

Millions? I've never heard of it. It never happens to me or to anyone I
know. Are we doing something special to avoid this "well known bug"?

Never fails? Now ->that's an interesting claim.

The only time I see the "red X" in place of an image is when the
underlying URL points to a non-existent file. Are you suggesting that
Firebird can somehow avoid this?

Ed,
Pictures Are Not Displayed on Web Sites in Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283807

Are you using a Firewall or "filtering software"?

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]
Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium"
"Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"
Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption
Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

Web Pages Display a Red "X" Instead of a Graphic
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316545 [Norton Products]

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer"
or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.
Symtom: Page cannot be displayed / Cannot find server or DNS Error

In the event you can not access a site or missing graphics and
you believe it may be due to an entry in the HOSTS file.

You can use a simple batch file to rename the HOSTS file "on-the-fly".

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

And that's completely different story... IE shows red X-es instead of some
existing pictures and it's mostly when some small pictures are involved.
You've never heard of it ? Or you are very transparent liar, or you don't
know what you're talking about... try to search some forums with that topic,
and you wouldn't be so sure that everything regarding IE works great... IE
is full of bugs. Do you understand that you non-IE hater ?!!
