I know I have seen this occuracnce before, but can not recall the fix.
Lately I see a red 'x' where an icon or picture would normally be on some
web sites. Example on todays Verizon w/MSN.com home page (verizon.msn.com)
there is an ad on the right that has no picture at all and below is a
section called Surround. The 'Surround' bix is mared w/the red 'x' in the
corner.
What do I need to check or change to correct this? TIA...

Hi Larry,
I did access it it is working for me here!.
1=Try to clear your IE caches and delete Offline content and cookies, then
click on View >> on your Browser Menu and select* Encoding* and see what
option set to, if not AutoSelect select that and click away to close the drop
down list.
2=Also if you have MCafee Privacy Service try to disable it and see if the
issue will go away.
3= Go to the IE Properties Menu and click on Advanced tab and scroll down to
Multimedia and be sure that the Option [ ] Show Pictures is checked.
Please try one step at a time and reboot your machine and see if it will work.
HTH.
Please let us know.

nass
P.S BTW do you have Image Accelerator software installed or installed extra
with some softwares?.

nass.. If you look at the article suggested previously some of those same
suggestions are there.
I did however check the Encoding as you suggested. It had a dot by Unicode
UTF8. I checked Auto Select
no change. And yes, I did clear temp Inet files & cookies too.

Afa Image accelerator s/w. No idea what you mean. I have XP Pro sp2 IE 6.0
w/ZoneAlarm suite.

Hi,
I agree. I think there's a problem with the page. Firefox just displayed the
word "Surround" twice. IE7 had the red x.

The Image Accelerator software mentioned by Nass would be a download
accelerator offered by Earthlink, NetZero, AOL, and others. They cause
images to be blurry and can cause other problems. They do speed things up a
bit for those on a slow dial-up line.

Ok Don, I do have AOL, but don't know about the accelerator prog. Lord knows
it loads plenty of stuff though.
I have DSL so that part of it is not an issue. Vz is my ISP.

nass, I am running AOL 9.0 Security Ed. It looks diff. than the pictures in
that article. I did however see Top Speed on, so I turned it off. No change.
Oddly enough eventhough Top Speed said it was on when I went into AOL
Explorer it always said Topspeed was off anyway.

nass, just want to comment on this part (I am putting in what I see) unfort.
I can't bold it.

Hi Larry,
Open the RUN Command and type in;

regedit.exe Enter (I used regedit). I made no changes.

On the Registry Editor Locate this KEY; (be warrned backup your registry
first before any changes as always you can revert back if any thing gone
wrong!)

This is 1 area I have not become comfortable with, eventhough I can do it.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif
You will see in the Right pane the following;
[] (Default) REG_SZ the name of the default you open the any
Image (says EasyShare.gif) This is from my Kodak camera s/w. I saw I can
change this from Control panel - Folder options. But change to what?

[] Content Type REG_SZ (here change the value into image/gif if not
aleardy been set) (This says image/gif)

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
[] Content Type REG_SZ image/jpeg (change to this value) (In
jpeg & jpg it is already set to this.)

Close the registry Editor and Reboot your machine and see if will solve the
problem.

=Another try to Disable the ADD-Ons and see which one is culprit (start
first with AOL for Accelerator).
I still don't follow this. Top speed is already turned off.
