red x and pictures

i have windows XP with sp2. when i visit some sites and try to view some
pictures insread of seeing the picture all i see is the frame where the
picture should be and a small red x in the top left corner of the frame. a
friend of mine recently posted some of his pictures, some of them i can view,
others i can't, i know that other people can view his pictures, so why can i
view only some of them when others can view all of them?
