ugh. blech. i hate this crap.
ok, so i have two computers running win 98 second edition.
computer 1 "bill" is connected to the net via cable.
computer 2 "me" is connected to "bill" peer to peer i
guess. "me" has no real problems other than typical
spyware, virus, and user errors. wish i was perfect. "me"
can access the net just fine, through "bill".

when attempting to access the net, "bill" on the other
hand gets this nasty frigin' error bright red screen with
white writing in a browser window "401 Authorization
Required This server could not verify that you are
authorized to access. Either you supplied the wrong
credentials (e.g. bad password) or your browser doesn't
understand how to supply the credentials required."

here's the thing: i can ping sites from "bill" and also
send and receive email via outlook express. this problem
started about 2 or 3 months ago, and i occasionally look
at it to see if i can fix it, but so far, no go. i
recently installed a mcafee firewall (which of course does
not work because it cannot connect to the net)

anyone want to give me some basic things to check to
further diagnose what the problem may be?

thanks!

Besides your attitude, you have several problems. You should have installed
a firewall a long time ago, like before going on the internet. You probably
DO have viruses, spyware, adware, hijackware, trojans, worms and every other
threat out there and you are helping to spread them to everyone else.
Thanks for that.

Firewall software should not require net access to function properly
although I know McAfee has that update feature built-in. Try Zonealarm
instead (zonelabs.com)

Then get your antivirus updated, get to all the spyware sites that have tons
of advice on the other stuff, clean up your systems, get all the critical
windows updates, etc...

Last but not least, as I am telling many folks on this group, get over Win98
please. It's time for XP.

hey thanks so so much for the reply. i inherited this
problem, didn't cause it, and have a very clear idea of
what i really need to do: blow it away and build it up
from scratch the right way (which does include updating to
xp, installing & configuring a firewall, installing
antivirus software and other security measures, and
educating the other users about what not to click when an
enticing ad for a free trip to hawaii pops up) i've got
three days mapped out in september for systems overhaul
and i'm simply trying to get answers to any odd odd
questions before i start.

sure, this problem may be caused by spyware. hijackthis,
spybot, lavasoft, spy doctor, and pestpatrol haven't found
this issue nor solved the issue. i've carefully reviewed
the registry on this machine...nothing looks too out of
place.

anyway, thanks for your help, and the reminder to check my
attitude at the door. i'm sorry if i offended anyone...i
used to like this stuff, but now i just get to frustrated.

peace.
