Hi Sinead :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Right click on the graphic you see and a pop up menu should appear. Select
"Show Picture" option.

Then, go to Internet Options>Advanced Tab
Show Pictures - check option if
unchecked to display pictures all the time.

Try clearing the IE cache. I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files (and
delete offline content.)

also try...................

I can't see JPG's or GIFS any more - red x - images missing - fuzzy
images/distorted images
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers.htm#jpg_gif
or
Pictures Do Not Show
http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/redx.htm

or........

To restore the default file association, go to
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

If none of the above work, then they the following:

Download and install the following:
http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp

See: http://javatester.org/index.htm
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm

Download the Microsoft Java VM for Windows XP here
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

You can test whether Java is working on your machine at the following sites:

http://www.pocoso.de/pocoso052.html
http://www.clan.lib.ri.us/clan/javatest.html (This one may be down)
http://www.fitwise.com/testjava.asp (both 1.0 and 1.1 and what's installed)
http://coglab.wadsworth.com/support/browsercheck.html
http://www.ces.clemson.edu/webct/browser_detect.html

and you can test Javascript here:
http://www.dancespots.net/browsertest.htm

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:
http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html (all versions - select using the
dropdown)

or here: http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in
here: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

Try here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers3.htm#activex

or................

For best security set Active X settings to:

My settings are for Active X are:
Prompt
Disable
Disable
Prompt
Prompt

or.....

Try temporarily disabling your firewall to see if HTTPS then works
correctly.

Web Page Displays an Image As a Red X or Not at All (Q283807)

http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ieimage.htm

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi Jan,
I am also having this problem with red x's in place of images. I have
tried everything you listed, also... I checked out the other website tips,
tried all of Microsoft's tips, java tests are good and still no luck. I am
running IE 6 sp1 with Windows98. I also have a Linksys router that I connect
through, along with an xp pc, which runs the browser perfectly. I just
recently completely restored my computer and installed my ISP software
(SBCyahoo!) which uses IE, so I am unable to go back to a previous version of
IE. I tried having IE "fix" any problems and when that didn't help, I
uninstalled/reinstalled the browser. I don't yet have antivirus or firewall
up and running, so that rules them out. This is very frustrating, I hope you
or someone else can help.
Thanks a bunch for reading my post! ;O)

Hi hartshaped :)

Sorry for the previous mis-send....

Have right clicked on the images and selected 'show image' to see if they
will load? If not try that and see what happens.

Right click on the graphic you see and a pop up menu should appear. Select
"Show Picture" option.

Then, go to Internet Options>Advanced Tab
Show Pictures - check option if
unchecked to display pictures all the time.

Also..I see that the SBC Yahoo comes with a popup blocker that comes with
the installation. There are some popup blockers that can block images. Try
disabling the popup blocker and see if that helps:

You said that you don't have any firewall installed, yet, according to your
SBC Yahoo DSL install information indicates that Zone Alarm is installed as
part of the basic installation package. Zone Alarm Pro can block images in
IE. You might also check to see if you do have it installed on you machine,
and check settings to see if it has anything that will block images. It
does not say which version comes with your SBC Yahoo install, so I'll post
this anyway, just in case.

1. Go into IE>Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom level>reset custom
level to Medium or Low
2. Go into IE>Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>set the slider to Medium or Low
3. Go to this site and read on adjusting the Privacy settings in ZA. It will
explain how to customize on a per site basis.
http://www.donhoover.net/privacy.html

The only other thing I can think of is, that some ISP software can overwrite
IE settings, and can cause various problems in IE. You might check with SBC
and see what their technical support people advise as well. I can only
suggest the following in this area:

First...right click on the red x and select "show image"
Make sure the graphic format is correct (i.e. JPEG, BMP, etc)
If not, open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer)
Go to a folder where you have some of the same graphic files
Highlight one of the graphics, then click on Tools on the top toolbar
Click on Folder Options>File Type tab
Scroll down the list until you find the correct graphic icon
Highlight it and click OK
Close Windows Explorer and then reopen

One last suggestion:

I can't see JPG's or GIFS any more - red x - images missing - fuzzy
images/distorted images
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers.htm#jpg_gif
or .
http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/redx.htm

or.....................

To restore the default file association, go to
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Download, unzip and merge the REG file, "JPE/JPG/JPEG Association Fix"
Some image/graphics programs will change file associations

or..

Perhaps your ISP compresses images to reduce download time. Ones's such as
Earthlink, AOL,
Netzero and a few others have this option. You may be able to disable it by
checking your ISP Help files.

also.

Change the DPI setting from Large to Normal and see if that helps.

I'm not that familiar with Windows 98, and perhaps someone else here will
have some better information for you that will help. :)

Hope this helps

Hi Jan,
Thank you for all of your help. I did turn off the pop-up blocker, which
didn't help. Zone Alarm doesn't come "bundled" with the sbcyahoo software.
They advertise it as giving you free firewall, when actually you are just
directed to the Zone Alarm website, where they offer the free version
download anyway ;O). I didn't want to reinstall it until I fixed this IE
issue. SBCyahoo tech support (in India) were of no help and were sure it was
a Compaq issue. Since I just purchased my Compaq xp machine in Dec., I was
able to get free tech support, even though it was this Windows 98 machine
giving me the trouble. After an hour of troubleshooting/tinkering, we
discovered the problem... it is the "Encoding" under "View" on the IE
toolbar. It will not stay set to "Western European (Windows)", it will keep
changing to either "Unicode..." or "Western European (ISO)" every time I go
to a different page. I have to manually select "Western European (Windows)"
every time a new webpage is opened, then I can see the pictures. Auto-Select
is NOT selected. I even tried a little experiment with choosing "Western
European (Windows)" and then turning on Auto-Select and going back to that
same page, it chose the (ISO). This is all taking place within the IE
browser, my SBCyahoo browser doesn't have the Encoding tool, so consequently,
I cannot see any pictures with it because by default, it uses what IE wants
to use and I can't make it use "Western European (Windows)". Do you know any
fixes for this?? I feel 99% better just having found the problem, now I need
to fix it. ;O)
Hope you or any other readers can help. Thanks a bunch!
