did you try Running in Admin mode?

Excuse me, but I own the computer with WINDOWS VISTA from less than 1 week.
Is it written on the on line guide how to run a program in Admin mode ?
If not, Can you explain me how to do that ?

Red Baron 3D came out 9 years ago. According to Wikipedia it uses the Glide
3d driver. I suspect the problem is that the Vista drivers do not support
Glide. You might check with the support website for your display board and
see if they support it with their Vista drivers.

I hope that helps!

I remember that in the RED BARON installation there is the option for the
GLIDE acceleration and i didn' t select it. If it is an option the program
should run also without it, shouldn' t it ?
Do you know how is it possible in Windows Vista to verify if in the system
the GLIDE acceleration is available ?

Glide is a 3D mode used by old 3Dfx Voodoo cards, if you don't have a 3Dfx
card in your system (more than likely, no) then weather or not you install
Glide support won't matter to Windows.

This isn't really your problem, the problem is, you have a really old game,
and a really NEW operating system.

Right-click the RB3D icon and select Properties.
Change the game Compatibility to "Windows 98", check Run as Administrator,
Disable Visual Themes, and Disable Desktop Composition.

Click OK, try the game again.

You may need to turn off User Account Control (It's in the User Accounts
Control Panel), and chances are kindda there that this game simply won't run
without some additional tweaking.

Is RB3D a DOS based game, or does it actually run in Windows mode? With DOS
games you might try a DOS emulator like DOSBox (Google it), DOSBox emulates
a PC running MS-DOS in Windows, Still kind of a pain in the ass, but it's an
option.

Write back Ilver, if no luck I'll poke around a bit more and make some
suggestions. Might call the game maker (Sierra?) and see if they have
suggestions for getting the game going.

I have tried your suggestions in administrator mode and in simple user mode,
in both of the cases I got the message a program is trying to modify some
Windows video settings". I contacted also the Italian Sierra support, and
they told me that the game was too old for the OS.

It may be too old, but I bet you could get it running. That's Sierra's way
of saying, "We don't want to invest in the money to figure out how to run
the game in Vista."

Here's a trick I used to use a LONNNNNNNNGGGGGG time ago when
troubleshooting games in Windows 9x.

Sometimes DirectX fails to set the in-game resolution and color depth in
Windows when it ran. The solution was to set Windows to the resolution that
the game ran in.

If you know what mode the game starts in (like 800x600 256 color) try
setting Vista to that setting BEFORE you run the game. May not be a good
fix, but might allow the game to startup.

Also try installing Red Barron in an unprotected folder like c:\users\(your
username)\appdata\Red Barron, that might let the game run.

I guess it depends on how much time you want to invest in getting the game
going, but if you're "desperate", let me know, i'll have to try and "find" a
copy of the game, but I enjoy a challenge.

In my system is not possible to have a Windows screen 640x480 with 256
colors, so I tried the same parameter in the program compatibility options
but Red Baron didn' t start. The program was developed for Windows 95 and in
a Wikipedia web page there is written that it could run with Vista and XP. I
have also tried to remove the user controls in the control panel without
success.

Sorry to hear that Ilver,

I remember Sierra Online, one of the first "Closed Garden" online gaming
services (Think XBox Live, but with a 33.6k modem, and on the PC) had Red
Baron, what a great game. So authentic it was unbelievably fustrating when
you went up against guys who really knew how to fly. Such an art to flying
those planes.

Ah, memories.
