Watching Avast go through the files, it occasionally finds something dodgy
in "C:\Recyclers......". When I try to examine the folder, neither Explorer
nor a Command prompt can find it. Search likewise comes up blank.

Google had a few hits for it, amongst the squillion or so urging me to reuse
grass clippings and the like, but they didn't go any further than I have
already tried.

Any ideas/info?

You need to show "Protected files" in the folder options, then you can go
there and delete 'em all. It's where Windows keeps the recycle files for
each profile.

XP Tools-Folder Options-View & scroll down
Check show hidden files &
uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
