yesterday I deleted the SID folders within C:/RECYCLER - then that begged
the question: 'how long do those files and folders remain on your machine?',
'if I hadn't deleted them would they be on my hard drive forever?' Thanks

You evidently don't empty the recycle bin very often. What you did
accomplishes the same task, but it has the problem
that the SID folders will need to be recreated. The system should do that,
but there can be quite a bit of difference between
"should" and "does".
Yes, if you don't empty the trash barrel, it will stay full. The files will
not leave until you take action.

Jim, thanks for the reply but I do routinely empty the recycle bin - from
what I could tell is the RECYLER directory was made up of previous deletes
from the bin/barrel. My question was more along the lines of how many weeks
or months are the accumulated bin emptings kept in the RECYCLER SID folders.

On my machines, this time is zero. I. E., when I tell it to empty my
recycle bin, the folder for my SID is empty immediately.

WTF is the "RECYCLER" directory?

You running Norton?

Why would you presume that? There's a native "recycler" folder in XP -
that's where all users' Recycle Bins actually live. It's just hidden from
normal view.
