I would actually shut pc down, install that program on another computer
connect the harddrive and try recover from there.
BTW: On Norton Utilities (it's also with Norton SystemWorks) there is
program installed is Norton Protected Files, the way how it works is that
when you're deleting file, file isn't really deleted, but is moved to
norton protected files (just like recycle bin, but it works also for
programs that doesn't use recycle bin), the files are automatically purged
after 7 days (default settings) or after filling up preconfigured quota.
It won't help now, but it could protect from later accidents (it helped me
couple times
