Hi,

I recently attached a 300 GB external hard drive to my 100 GB system running
WindowsXP. I have been transferring files to my pc - mostly to the external
hard drive. Deleting many old files, I know have the Recycle Bin claiming it
holds 4 files after deletion. Opening the Bin shows nothing - but the icon
on the desktop signifies there is something there and each time I click on
it - it asks do I want to delete the 4 files! I do - I hear the sound of the
Bin deleting but the desktop icon doesn't change and still claims to have 4
files - even after restarting the system.

Any suggestions?

Open a command prompt and enter the following commands

<d>: ' Switch to the drive you're interested in
cd \
rd /s/q Recycler
exit

Reboot.

Mike Ober.

[[No files may appear in the Recycle Bin if the files in the Recycled folder
are damaged.]]

Run Error Checking. Reboot. Try to empty the Recycle Bin again.

Error Checking (chkdsk.exe).
1. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click the drive you want to
check, and then click Properties.
2. On the Tools tab, click Check Now.
3. Select both of these:

o Automatically fix file system errors
o Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

You have to reboot for Error-checking to run.

For a look at the chkdisk log.

I do appreciate these instructions, but they did not seem to work for me.
this is what I did last

CMD: prompt

switched to the external drive - in my case J:
ran chkdsk

it found errors

so ran chkdsk/f to fix

and then it stopped to say it couldn't do it unless it was dismounted ... so
I used the WindowsXP's Remove hardware program to dismount it and then went
back to the CMD - repeated steps in to chkdsk/f.

I covered 1% and then quit and the J:\ came up.

Repeated chkdsk/f again it covered 11% and then quit and the J:\ came up.

Repeated chkdsk/f for a 3rd time - it covered 7% and then quit and the J:\
came up....so I decided to quit and return here.

But then I used WindowsXP's Install hardware program to remount the external
hard and it worked, but it also is no longer J:\. it is K:\ Which is now
something else that I am not too fond of.

Any ideas?

You can simply reboot to dismount the drive.

Or, use chkdsk /x

Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid
(implies /F).

Hi,

I tried chkdsk /x

and it worked nicely in dealing with the dismount (and of course the opened
handles to the volume became invalid as expect)

and it started out better than before where it simply stopped the process
around 11%.

Well this time is worked nicely for a while, fixing/truncating files and
such, but it too just stopped at 56%. I ran it again and it stopped at 53%.

Why is it stopping?

DATA:
300 GB external hard drive (Seagate) with file sys of FAT32 (which is
different than my internal, primary hard drive).

Thanks,
