Recycle Bin Not working properly

Hey :)

I'm trying to fix my dad's pc, and I'm having a real issue with the recycle
bin.

When the bin is right-clicked on the desktop, the only options are these:
Cut
Paste
Create shortcut
Delete

There is a recycler folder, which contains about 2gb of files. If I rename
that folder and then delete something XP creates a new recycler folder, but
the desktop shortcut is unaffected.

I've come across some pretty weird stuff over the years, but this has really
got me stumped.

His pentium 4 pc is running XP SP2.

Help!!!!

Thanks :)

This tip is for someone who accidentally deleted his/her Recycle Bin icon.
However, it is not a tip for the inexperienced computer user. Therefore,
anyone using this tip should exercise caution because to fix this problem
requires editing the Registry. As always, back up your Registry files
(System .dat and User .dat, hidden files) on the root of your hard drive
before proceeding with this fix. Open the Registry Editor by selecting
Start, Run, and then type regedit and click OK. Now navigate your way to
HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\ NameSpace. In the left pane, right-click
the NameSpace key and select New, Key. Now type exactly
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and press Enter. You can save some
typing by copying the above line to your clipboard, pressing Ctrl-V after
selecting New, Key. In the right pane, right-click Default and select
Modify. In the resulting Edit String dialog box, on the Value Data line,
type Recycle Bin and press OK. Finally, close the Registry Editor, click the
desktop once, press F5 to refresh, and you should see your Recycle Bin icon
again.

Rich,

I did not lose the recycle bin. It's still on my desktop. It just doesn't
work.

For the record, though, I did delete the recycle bin and used the registry
to rebuild the recycle bin earlier today. Obviously it had no effect.

I also ran the System File Checker, which also had no effect.

Hi Paul,

Try this REG fix:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/XP_Show_Recycle_Bin.reg
This rebuilds the Recycle Bin namespace key with the default contents.
