KB823353 - Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP 1, keeps being
shown on an update scan. It's been downloaded and installed already, in fact
4 times according to the history.

I've uninstalled/installed OE via control panel add/remove windows
componets feature but critical update notification still appears.

Can anyone tell me whats happening and how it correct. ????

Greetings,

I have the same problem.

Currently have Windows 2000 Prof SP4 and Upgrades.

I have manually tried to download and install.

At Installation, I get the error that Outlook Express 6 - Service Pack 1 but
first be installed.

BUT this was previously installed on an auto-update

a help on OE shows version 6.00.2800.1123

other versions of KB823353 require XP and did not install on w2k.

Any other suggestions anybody?

I'm having the same problem and its annoying. Its been "installed" over 20
times. Automatic Update keeps showing it on the update list. I've spent over
an hour checking my system and reviewing posts on the forum.

I'm running W2K SP4 and OE 6.00.2800.1106

A solution to this problem would sure be nice.

Scott/Jay,

I've solved problem by re-installing IE6. On rescan I installed KB823353
on it's own, retarted, rescanned and checked whether it re-appeared - it
didn't. I then installed all the others (4 or 5 can't remember which). If
you go down the IE6 reinstall route post to let us know if successful

Top posting: regarding the SP4 security rollup patch as possibly related to
the KB823353 problem.

Has anyone seen the post two below this thread (sort by sent), began the
same day, time 4:40pm,
Subj: Re: Windows Update Failing - Error 0x80072EFF?

The error is different, but the cause may be the same:

As a matter of fact, yes.

Many people are removing it. MS is going to re-issue it at some point in
time."

I've been having the same frustrating KB823353 install/reinstall problem.
Also, Rick C. Hodgin mentioned that having Automatic Updates on may conflict
with the WU site, so I just turned AU off.

possible answer

I too, have the same problem, but had it with a different update. Then I updated with the one mentioned in this thread and now am in the boat with the rest of you.

I think it is not the update, but the update processor that is giving us the hassles. It is simply not updating some registry with the id of the last update, so that the last one in the list keeps repeating.

Just my two cents.

So, M$ needs to take a look at their new update programs and fix it for us. If any-one has an open order with them, you might mention my observations.

Fix: Re-install KB897715

Un-installing patch for KB897715(Control Panel -> Remove Programs), and re-installing it after KB823353 seems to do the trick.

Thanks for suggestions . I might have done something that I should not have done with my system.

I had copied most of my $uninstall items from WINNT to CD, and then deleted them from my system drive because I needed some space. My thoughts were that I would not need these unless I ever wanted to uninstall something.

Now I'm thinking that when one installs a new patch, this process might be looking for older patches to see how much to install etc. If the older patches patches are not on the system (as $uninstall), then perhaps the lastest install might hiccup.

I cannot uninstall , as of right now, because I must restore these items to my C drive , and of course my CD is not close at hand.

I will copy back to my C drive, and try the uninstall/install that you suggest and let you all know.
