Recurring Explorer.exe problem

For some reason on a recurring basis, explorer.exe won't be able to display
the contents of folders on my computer. For example, it will open My
Documents and will show the the number of objects in the folder at the
bottom of the window, but it won't show the individual folders and files
inside the folder. When the cursor is placed over the window, an hourglass
is shown but the window still remains blank. The only fix is to reboot and I
have to manually close explorer.exe. When Windows boots back to the desktop,
there is an Active Desktop error and I have to click on a button to restore
the Active Desktop.

What would be the steps to find out why this is happening?
