I was typing my hummanities paper for college and Microsoft said it need to
shut down. Of course i didn't save it but then it just diappeared. Is there
any places I can look for it? I tried the Tools and Options but that is on
Microsoft 97 and I am using Windows Works Word Processor. I would really not
like to type this all again. Please if anyone can help.

Eww, one of those marathon typing sesions without saving your work? The
school of hard knocks just registered a new student.

Idealy you would load the last saved version and repeat the last 1/4 to
1/2 hour of work. Did you save your work to disk at ANY point? If you
didn't it may not be recoverable at all. The Word module of Microsoft
Office (purchased seperately or part of the Office or Essentials Suites)
has an optional feature that automaticly saves the file periodicaly, but
Works word processor may not have that feature. That's part of why
Microsoft can get away with charging more for Word.

If the file was saved at some point there may be a SMALL hope with a
third party utility. Searh for file recovery software WITH ANOTHER
COMPUTER. Any use of the computer you were typing on, even rebooting the
operating system, reduces the chance you could recover part of the
damaged file.

There's nothing as far as the operating system goes. If you didn't save your
work then I'm guessing it is lost but ask them here about possible document
recovery features.

You could check the temporary files folders, mostly for files starting with
~. These folders are often set as hidden, so you'll have to turn on the
option to view those.

However, it may simply be gone if you hadn't saved it and if Works has no
autosave functions.

I had someone get in my computer from a remote one and he couldn't find it.
Oh well I guess i wll be enrolled in the School of Hardnocks for a while
longer. Now I am almost spastic on saving anything i am writing just waiting
for it to happen again. I couldn't find an autorecover anywhere on Windows XP
I hope there is one out there. My paper is written again and saved hopefully
the system won't crash. Thank you guys for responding so quickly!!

Things like this is why it's a good idea to perodicaly make copies of
important files on floppies, flash memory like a thumb drive or camera
memory chip, CD-RWs, external hard drives or networked file servers.
Some say it's not a matter of IF a hard drive will fail, but a matter of
WHEN the hard drive will fail.
