I had a Windows XP Home running perfectly with apps. Then I tried to apply
SP1a on to it, and it screwed up in the middle of applying the Service
Packs.

I did not ask it to backup the file. Am I screwed?

Can I recover just the OS with all the apps intact with the XP Home CD?
How? Thanks

Sarah you need to give more detail. What exactly happened so that it,
"screwed up in the middle"? Error messages? What happens now when you
try to boot?

I can't remember exactly the error, perhaps it said that it can't continue
to apply the Service Pack.

The machine did not crashed as the ServicePack aborted, but then I rebooted
the machine.

The Windows XP Logo came up briefly and then blackened then it restarted
back again ...

So, I guess I screwed up the boot process ....some file that is executed
early on.

How do I just restore the core os but preserving the apps? Thanks

Thanks.

Place your XP CD in the drive and boot with it in. Follow the on screen
prompts for a repair install and then hit the "R" when prompted to do so to
get into the recovery console. Once there type in fixmbr and hit enter on you
keyboard. Follow the on screen prompts to write a new master boot record by
clicking yes when asked. Then try rebooting. }:~)
