My windows management instrumentation is corrrupted - can I use the recovery disks to replace the files that are corrupted? And will this effect my existing programs or data

Most System Recovery disks do a total "slash and burn" of your
existing hard drive contents. Everything on the drive is totally
wiped out beyond recovery and a fresh new copy of the operating system
(plus bundled apps, if any) is installed. The computer ends up just
like it was when it left the factory.

Try opening a DOS command window and entering the following command:

SFC /SCANNOW

and then follow the instructions. That may fix the problem for you.
