New laptop?
Contact those who sold you the laptop and find out how to make or obtain
said media. Know that if they did not provide a way to make the media and
they did not sell you media - they may sell you media now.

Used laptop?
Check your receipt and see what was to be included. After that - if nothing
was included - contact the laptop manufacturer for assistance and see what
recovery method it should have and how you can obtain actual media.

What you REALLY would like is true installation media - not
restoration/recovery. The latter may be nothing more than an image of what
is supposed to be on the machine. The former is the actual media for the
actual products - so you can install them individually.

IBM told me _repeatedly_ that their recovery CD would act as a full
installation CD on a freshly formatted drive. More BS?

Probably not more BS although the applicability might be to a
specific IBM computer make or model of computer and/or part.

The answers to my original question seem to gone off key what I wanted was
to deal with a desktop and not a laptop, so can anyone help please.

Thanks

The problem is the store where I bought it has gone bust.

Then use imaging software like Acronis True Image to image your current
system. At some point you will probably need to purchase a retail copy of
the operating system (XP). It would also be wise to do a system inventory
of your hardware and get drivers downloaded and backed up to cd-r.
