Running XP Home SP2 with all security updates. Haven't used RC in a while.
Went to run it the other day and got a blue screen. Have it set up in
Boot.ini to provide alternative to get to it during boot from which it
failed. Tried to reinstall it using instructions in KB 307654 and got error
message that XP installed is later than on CD.

You may need to create the integrated install and install the RC from there.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900871/

or just boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom to start the RC.

About to try this. Tried solution described in kb 898594 to no avail. The
Windows SP2 CD (obtained from MS) does not have i386 folder on it. Have the
download version also, but it does not have cmdcons. If that does not work,
may just boot from Windows CD and select R. Tested this and RC comes up. For
the few times I need RC, I can probably do without the alternate boot
selection.

You'll need to extract the files from the CD-Rom. Something like;

D:\SP2\XPSP2.EXE /x

You'll be prompted to specify a location for the files to be extracted to.
Then you can continue to create the integrated installation.

The Recovery Console can be installed after Windows XP Service Pack 2
has been installed.

Basically, you must temporarily replace the XPSP1 c:\i386\WINNT32.EXE
file with the XPSP2 WINNT32.EXE file, then you run the
"c:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons" command. No other changes or Registry
edits should be necessary.

There are step-by-step instructions on the following page:

Microsoft Windows XP FAQ
21. Recovery Console SP2 Revision
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/xpfaq.html#021

Under step number 21-4, click the link "SP2 work around fix". In case
the above link is broken, here's the text of the workaround [I've added
a few additional comments in brackets]:

Work around compliments of "Jon" from the msnews newsgroups.

You can install Recovery Console, AFTER SP2 installation, via the
following workaround...

For this you need the full network version of SP2. Downloadable from
here
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en>

1. Open a command prompt in the folder containing the SP2 installer and
type "WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe -x". Choose a folder to extract
the files to e.g. file:///c:/SP2files [You can also burn these files to
a CD].

2. Make a backup of the file winnt32.exe in c:\windows\i386 [or in
c:\i386].

3. Replace the winnt32.exe file in c:\windows\i386 with the identically
named file in C:\sp2files\i386 (or in the i386 folder in the folder
where you extracted the files.)

4. Open a command prompt at c:\windows\i386. Type "winnt32.exe
/cmdcons" [you can also use Start > Run > "c:\windows\i386\winnt32.exe
/cmdcoms"]. Recovery Console should install (Ignore the first error
message, if any.) [Cancel the "Microsoft Dynamic Update" if it appears,
and select "Skip this step and continue Windows installation".]

5. Replace the winnt32.exe in c:\windows\i386 with its original version
(created in step 2.)

Hope this works for you

Jon

I've done this twice on separate XP machines and it works fine.

Dave, I tried the integration and all went well except when Win got to the
install process. Then I got several 'could not find file' messages. I
bypassed four of these and after the fifth, I gave up. I have now removed
Recovery Console from my system and will get into it from the Win CD if I
need it. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info. As I mentioned in my reply to Dave Patrick, I have
uninstalled RC from my systems and will get to it from my Win CD if I need
it. However, I will save your comments and try them should I decide to
re-install RC.

Ok, you're welcome.
