There must be a better way to get around this problem than phoning MS.
Please tell me there is.

I am the only user of this comp - ie, no password

Why not repost with the whole context, i.e. what operating
problem makes you want to run the Recovery routine?

Can you boot the computer normally or are you stuck needing to access
the Recovery Console to fix a broken Windows installation?

Yes - I'm stuck - need to get to the recovery console. I have it loaded, it
wants my password. I had one originally, maybe it would work.
When I boot, I have a choice between the console and win xp

The password for the Recovery Console is the one for the built-in
Administrator account. If you have forgotten it, you can change it to a
blank with NTpasswd and then boot with your XP CD into Recovery Console.
