Hi,
I am trying to use the Recovey Console to restore my Master Boot
Record. I run WinXP Home SP1. I am the only user of my computer and and
listed as Computer Administrator in the User Accounts. I have never had a
password. So when I booted with my WinXP CD and got to the section where you
pick R for Recovery Console, after you pick the Windows Option you want to
repair------in my case it is only one, my C:\Windows------it asks you for
administrator password. So I left it blank and entered. No luck---tells me
invalid. After3 unsuccessful tries the computer reboots. So I left Windows
load normally. I actually go ahead and set a password for myself. I reboot
and let Windows load again and sign on with the password. I then go ahead and
reboot and I left the WinXP CD boot the computer and get back to that same
place after choosing R for Recovery Console and picking the only
choice---number 1---I enter the password exactly lower cased as I made it in
Windows, and it once again tells me invalid. What now? Can someone please
help???

The password being requested is that of the built-in
_Administrator_ account, not the password for any other administrative
user accounts that the computer's owner may have created. Unless the
owner deliberately set the Administrator's password via the Management
Console (_not_ the Control Panel), it's probably still blank. WinXP
Pro asks the installer to set the Administrator's password during
installation, but WinXP Home doesn't.

I did leave it blank and it said invalid password. Do I have to space over
so many times blank and then hit enter?

Recovery Console Password
On many XP installations you can't start the Recovery Console because it
won't recognize your password. This registry edit causes the Recovery Console
not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Professional.

Start | Run | Regedit
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

Thank-you. This worked for getting rid of the asking of a password for
recovery console use.
