Question. I've pretty much decided to run my recovery CDs to get rid of about
5 virouses that are on my PC since nobody's anti-virus software will install.
My question is the computer manual states there are 3 options when doing this.
1. "Default system drive recovery" (recommended) This deletes all data on
Drive 'C'. 2. "Change partition size and recover". 3. "Factory default
settings recovery". #3 deletes all data on drives C&D. Since online virus
scans have indicated that the files containing the virouses are all in drive
'C' can I get away with choosing option #1?

Why don't make a PE-Builder cd on a virusfree computer and scan yours and
save all the stuff?

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

<<<Why don't make a PE-Builder cd on a virusfree computer and scan yours and

Thanks for the tip. What exactly would PE-Builder do for me? Does it get rid
of infected files?

Read on their site, I have a PE boot cd with 3 virus scanners , McAfee
Stinger,network,MS I explorer,lots of testing programs, browsers,
filebrowsers, Ad-Aware, The McAfee Virusscan for DOS is also updated in ti
RAM.
Can access NTFS / FAT32 partitions.
Just make a cd and boot from it.

Are you saying that I can make a boot CD with an anti virus program on it and I
can boot up from that CD and the anti virus program will run and delete the
viruses from my computer? Why would anyone run recovery CDs? Is there a
downside? Thanks.

Why not, it's a great chance to save your system and not loose anything.
Just follow the instructions from pe-builder.
If you run the windows recovery cd it just fix the windows files missing or
corrupt.
And the virus still be there.

But if you boot from a boot-cd the viruses or trojans are not activated and
you can get rid of them from the scanners running from the boot-cd.

Well that's not true. If I run the recovery CDs they delete everything on
the hard drive INCLUDING the virus.

Yes ok, but you still lose everything else. Don't just the virus.

Sounds like restore not recovery. Restore usually means restore to factory settings, and
recovery is less severe.

I had planned to back up things before I ran the recovery discs.

According to my manual I can choose to just delete everything on my 'C' drive
which is where the virouses are.
