Hi my computer (Compaq) came with an option to create
Recovery CD's in the event of a crash. It is located in
the Program Start Menu. I wanted to do create a set for
my son's computer (E-Machines), but he did not have that
option, nor was he provided with a Recovery CD. Is this
something that is not provided on every computer? Is
there a different way I can create a set for him? Thanks
for any help.

That is not a Windows feature.
That is a Compaq feature.

Emachines may do it differently.
If Emachines did not ship a CD, check the invoice and/or contact them.

Hi,

Each manufacturer chooses their own way of providing a recovery set. Dell
chose to provide a means of creating your own disks. With some, it is simply
a recovery partition hidden on the system. Check his owners manual for the
proper instruction set.

Peny,

You need to consult the manual that came with your sons eMachine to see what
the recovery option is with it and then if this is not satisfactory ,
contact eMachine directly for further support.
The recovery options differ from OEM vendor to vendor.

The recover option provided by the OEM only restores the computer to the as
delivered configuration. You {or your son} should invest in an image
application such as Symantec {PowerQuest} Drive Image, Symantec Norton Ghost
etc and create an restore image of your current configuration on CDs, DVDs
or external hard drive.

Hi Alice,

A Recovery disk made in WinME would restore WinME - not something you would
want to have happen after you upgrade. If you are purchasing a WinXP upgrade
disk, then this is all you will need. Your upgrade disk will serve for
recovery purposes.

then if i use the recovery cd to install win Me , will the files and programs
be erased?

Hi Alice,

I don't know. Using a USB1.1 cable on a USB2 port will simply slow the
connection, I've no idea if you can use a USB2 cable on a USB1.1 port -
never tried it.
