I have a computer that will not start. I have a black screen with a warning
that states a failure may be imminent even though the hard drive is listed as
the primary master. Is there any way to get past this screen and get the
compter to start from the recovery discs. I have already tried changing the
boot start up order to the cd-rom drive but I can not ever get it to go past
this screen.

Go into the BIOS and disable S.M.A.R.T. for the hard drive. Recover what you
can off of the hard drive and install a new one. Do not continue to use this
hard drive until it has been thoroughly tested. It sounds like it is
failing. If you continue to use it you will lose your data.

your lucky that your pc is warning you.the hard drive on my zd8000 failed
once and without warning to. my back up drive failed to but i was able to
recover my data from my mp3 player's 30GB hard drive but that back up was 4
months old and some of the datawas corrupted. i was able to fix the back up
hard drive but the data was lost. i wish you the best of luck in your
situation.

another thing you can do is to try to attach it to another pc externally via
usb and try to recover your data that way.

"Failure may be imminent" sounds like a message from S.M.A.R.T. This is a
reporting mechanism - when supported by the BIOS and the hard drive, you
will get early warning of a failing hard drive. XP also supports S.M.A.R.T.
and if enabled will show the same reports in Event Viewer.

Bottom line: 99% of the time, S.M.A.R.T. is accurate in predicting failure.
How much time is available before failure cannot be determined. It could be
months, weeks, days or hours. Thank the PC gods for the warning and replace
the drive as soon as possible.

Since you cannot boot with this drive, install new drive. Install XP to the
new drive. If there are files that you need to rescue from the old drive,
you could try hooking it up as a slave. If it's not completely kaput, you
should still be able to grab data files before it's retired permanently.

NOTE: If the failed drive is still under warranty, check with manufacturer
about getting a replacement. If you've already purchased a replacement
drive (not feasible to wait for the exchange), you can always use the one
from the manufacturer as additional storage.

saddly it is disabled ??

As others have mentioned your only alternative at this point is to try the
drive in another pc. It is also possible it may work as a slave drive in
this computer once a good drive is installed as the primary. Failing that
you could send it to a data recovery specialist. That usually starts around
$400 to $500 so it depends on how important the data is. If you don't need
the data install a new drive and try the recovery CD. This may or may not
work. Some recovery CDs make use of a hidden partition on the hard drive.
Hopefully yours doesn't.
