Evening Folks, the other day I bought a new base unit from
tiny over the internet!Anyway, today the rang me up saying
that I need to buy some £120 recovery cd thing. The problem
is I dont know whether i've been had with this whole cd
thing,I have no idea what it is or what it does.He was
throwing so much technical jargin in,I didnt understand at
all!He said it was something like a system recovers cd
pack from Microsoft and if u didnt have this,if the
computer crashes you wouldnt be able to use it again cause
you need this password or something? He then went on to
say that its fairly new and microsoft brought out this cd
recently and he then said something about it encrypts data
or something.Anyway, bottom line do you know what the hell
this thing is im going on about is and is it necessary or
I have just been cheated out of £120.Many Thanks

Some computers do not come with Recovery or Windows CDs.
They use a hidden partition on the hard drive.
The manufacturer is required to provide at least one method of
recovery and each of the above qualify.

Did you get a CD with this computer?
If not, you should get it, sooner or later it will be needed.

It almost sounds like they are trying to sell you an upgrade to
Windows XP Pro.
What operating system did the computer come with?
If your computer came with Home, and you are happy with the features,
you should not need the upgrade.

I think you have been 'had'. If I were you I would send the whole unit back
for a refund and buy your machine from a reputable source. From what you
have posted the vendor cannot be considered as a reputable source. Your
system should come with everything necessary to restore it to the condition
it was when you purchased it in the event of a catastrophic 'crash'.

If the machine doesn't have that 'ability', either because all necesary
software was not supplied either in the form of 'cds' or installed on the
hard drive in a separate partition, often hidden and protected, then you
have essentially been cheated and, if you want to retain the machine, you
should insist the vendor provide the required software without charge. If
they decline, it is time to speak to a Trading Standards Officer.
