Earlier this week I ran a program called ccleaner (Crap Cleaner) to
get rid of a Trojan. Instead of doing this it has destroyed my system
or as good as. All the Windows temp files have been>setver.exe

display.exe
country.sys
himem.sys
dblbuff.sys
ifshlp.sys

and win.com

I managed to find another machine with Windows 98 and copied these
files but I still can't get any access. I get a message that there is
a problem with with Windows registry and must start in Dos mode. I
can't run any programs and I've lost my long file names.

People have made various suggestions including a program called
restoration. That won't run in DOS mode; I tried an AVG recovery disk
but no luck.

first and foremost I want to recover all my data; all my important
data files have been backed up but I've still got music, tons of
pictures and other stuff.

I need to first and foremost get this data back then restore Windows.
Any intelligent suggestions appreciated.

A warning to everyone else, the CCleaner website sings its praises,
but you use this program at your peril.

Didn't you install Windows again *over* the broken operating system, as
I told you? As long as you don't use "format c:" all data will remain on
the hard disk.

There may be a problem with the registry though, it might be retained as
it had been, and if it is too broken, it will still interfere with your
installation. If Windows still won't run, remove the system.dat and
user.dat files from C:\Windows, and install again.

If you can't do that in DOS, because you don't know the command line
commands, ask an experienced friend, who will probably be able to fix it
for you. Basically it is (after having used a boot disk)

c:
cd \Windows
attrib user.dat -ahs
attrib system.dat -ahs
del user.dat
del system.dat

You cannot copy large amounts of data as long as you are running the
machine in DOS mode, because DOS doesn't know anything about cdrom
burners, and *very* little about networking. You need a working Windows.

I know it doesn't help but I have never had any problem with it.Perhaps it's
something peculiar to your set up.

I don't know what "cleaners" you used to solve your trojan problem
but I use CC and it has not caused one problem that I know of till I
read about yours. CrapCleaner is not a trojan removal tool as stated on
its site
"CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimisation tool. That
removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing it to run
faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best
part is that it's fast! (normally taking less that a second to run) and
Free."
As far as I know that is all it does.By the way,you didn't back up your
reg. did you? I thought everyone knew that messing with the Reg. is not
to be taken lightly as you have found out.
The moral here is Backup,Backup,Backup!
Long Live Freeware!

Did you try scanreg /restore from the DOS prompt after replacing the
files mentioned? How about scanreg /fix (although it's never done much
for me)?

The first thing I'd try if I were you, is a repair install, using the
files in c:\Windows\Options\Cabs, or c:\Win98, if the install files
are there. If they are not there, boot from the Windows CD (or use a
boot disk with CD support) and do it from there. All your programs and
data should remain intact; just the operating system files are
replaced.

If a repair install doesn't work, you can do a fresh install but
rename your program files and windows directory first (OLDPROG,
OLDWIN), and move the files from the root directory into a folder
(OLDROOT). Use a freeware DOS program like File Wizard to make it
easy. Rename win.com to win.old and winver.exe to winver.old (both in
c:\windows) before doing the fresh install. Once you have windows
re-installed, you need to reinstall the drivers for the video card,
sound card, modem, network card, etc. Use AIDA32 to identify the
devices and provide a driveguide.com to locate the drivers. You need
to re-install all your programs, too; hence the incentive to try a
repair install.

In retrospect, maybe it's time to take it to a shop or call in a
technician to do this. Make it clear you want your data backed up
first, including e-mails and address book, Favorites, My Documents, My
Music, My Pictures, etc. You could get a copy of Knoppix and do it
yourself, but unless you have done it before, it's probably not worth
the risk and grief.

Good luck.

Hi,
Sometime back I had a situation where my PC would not boot up and I
ended up taking it to a local technician who installed the hard drive
in another PC and reinstalled Windows 98 over the top to give back
access to the HD. It did not cost a huge sum, would have been cheaper
had I known how to do it myself. Sounds as though something similar is
advised for your PC.
Good luck,
Reg
