I downloaded a freeware incinerator and chose to shred the free space on C in
order to get rid of all the files that had been deleted, but were still on
the HD waiting to be overwritten. Since then I show practically no space
left on C, even thou before I used the incinerator only about 1/3 of the
drive was used. Does anyone know what I can do to recover this space?

Have you tried running Disk Cleanup? and don't forget the "more options" tab
where you can delete accumulated System Restore points if you wish.

I have never seen or heard of that one!
What they do, is overwrite with a series of passes(1-35).
Obviously something has gone wrong!
There is Heidi(Irish company, I think), and East-tec Eraser(was recommended
by MS a few years ago)
Whether you can try either of these 2, and it will wipe out what you have
loaded with the dud Program, I don't know!

Did you check your root directory to see if there are huge files there,
the size of your lost free space? I have a disk wipe utility that moves
all the wiped clusters into expanding files then deletes those files when
finished. If for any reason that process is terminated unexpectedly, it
leaves the files on the disk, which then can be manually deleted.
