On Monday I was hit with the blaster while downloading a
xp update. I thought my system was the problem so after
several attempts at stopping the shut down I decided to
reload XP. After installation my Modem could not be
recognized even though enabled. Using a 98 system I was
able to go on line and that's when I found out about the
worm. Since I couldn't go on line for the down load I had
to reload an old 98 over XP to get the modem to work then
load xp back over ( several hours)Now I'm faced with all
the updates and I can't Keep my dial up connection for 40
or more hours. I don't know if MSFT makes available CD
copies any suggestions?

Try getting hold of a magazine cover disk containing SP1 and installing that
first then go to the MS update site and download the more recent updates
online. I know this is too late but you should have done the following:
when the NT authority panel is displayed, during the 60 sec count down
period, go START/RUN and type
'shutdown -a' without the quotes. This will stop the comp from shutting down
and give you time to visit the appropriate web sites for a solution. I used
www.f-secure.com/v-descs/msblast.shtml This site has a cleaning tool and
links to the MS site from where you can download the security patch.

The wonderful world of service packs will be able to help you there. Run XP
SP1(a) which can be found on many of the cd's that come with computing
magazines and that will get you 80% through the updates.
