ive just had to do a fresh install of windows, and had no disks to do a back-up of everything, so i installed windows the same way as i did last time, to only replace windows files and keep everything else, but it has wiped everything.

is there anyway i can recover files?? i really hope there is cos i have some extremely important files that i cant afford to loose.

you may be able to recover, if you go to Sart > Search > Files and Folders and use that to see if you can find documents that way. it may of course not work if you have flattened your hard drive, if thats the case it could cost you £70 to get data recoverd by the pro's.

Where were the files stored before you did the re-install?

There are ways of getting files back under certain circumstances, but I've always found it to be expensive. You might like to have a look at the "Disklabs Data Recovery" link on the right hand side of this screen, and see if there is anything suitable on there.

Good luck, CI

thanks.

the files was stored in my documents, then i had a file in c:\downloads which is where i stored all my remixe's that havent been released n stuff(i DJ in a club so dropping new/rare remixes allways works well) ill try the things suggested though n see if that works, thanks.

Opps!!

To do a reinstall whether it's over the top or fresh without a backup of files/documents is just asking for trouble.
But then you didn't need me to tell you that
Good luck with it though :thumb:

Cheers,

Rich

not much i could do, i had nothing available to do a back-up with, a virus damaged sum windows files and i couldnt boot the comp, plus i have no dvd's or cd's to back-up onto, so had very little choice really.

Sorry to be gloomy, it comes witih age I think. But backups of your important files are essential before any major work. I learnt the same lesson many years ago with important work, and then I only had floppy disks to backup to.

Right didn't realise machine screwed over by a virus
Perhaps the next investment should be an additional internal/external hd for files to be stored on.

Just as long as you learn from this experience then you will be ok in the future. He says

Rich

The problem is that people don't realise that "My Documents" is part of the windows O/S. It overwrites the files when it attempts to re-create the user account. And please don't think I'm sounding cocky, I found out the hard way too! :o

For future reference, I found a copy of WinBackup on a recent PCPro DVD and it seems to be rather useful. You can set it to backup your "My Documents" folder as often as you wish, and it has CD/DVD storage capabilities too. :thumb:

There is a free version 1.86 running around, or you can upgrade to v2.0 for about $25. Not much help to you with this problem, but maybe a solution to save you from future grief.

managed to find a tool that might be able to help, just hopin it does, so far its found about 15000 files, so i could be in luck haha

I tend to partition me HD into C: for the OS and D: for all documents,Outlook Express store and Outlook Data Storage etc and E: for OS backups via Drive Image. I also use files and settings wizard for backups to E:. I have often re-installed Windows with this set up and never lost settings or documents. This setup is from some years of bad experiences.
By keeping My Docs seperate from the OS (on a seperate Partition) Things are a lot safer. I also use a USB HD for complete bakcups of the whole system and cd/dvd for seperate backups of my important files.

Am I over protected or what. :)

Another thought for future reference, if you couldn't boot the machine because of a virus damaged O/S, perhaps you could have put the damaged drive in another machine and used it as a slave.

I realise that this might possibly have caused further infection to the host machine, but seeing as you were not activating the O/S on the damaged disc, it might have been worth a shot.

I realise that it's too late now, but I'm posting this for any future visitors to this thread who may be in the same position.

If you are successful, please post the program details so that we have another device added to our armoury :thumb:

Yeah I was gonna suggest putting the hd in another machine as a slave but thought I might sound like I'm preaching. More than I do already :D
But yeah good shout :thumb:
