....I have Windows ME. I have someone who just downloaded
and installed the AntiSpyware beta. Evidentally the
program removed files they need and their firewall no-
longer works.
....She is not very familiar with computers or the software
and since I cant install the program, I cant look through
the program and explain how to recover these files using
the backup function.
....If one of ya'll will post in detail how to recover
removed files. I will pass this info on.

Thanks from me and I'm sure she will want me to pass on
her thanks.

There's no generic fix for removed files--restore from backup, or, if they
are system files, use a system restore point.

However--the firewall issue is relatively easy--neither of those mechanisms
are needed.

Follow this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892350

You'll note that for Windows XP, Service Pack 2, this is a simple three word
command line command. reboot and you're back in business.

If the user has chosen Quarantine, rather than remove, there is a process in
the program to recover items from the Quarantine area.

Lets ignore that for now and concentrate on getting the firewall going.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

I sent her to the Microsoft page you listed above. How
that works. She did not Quarantine.

I told her if that didnt work. Uninstall AntiSpyware and
reinstall her firewall.

Havent heard back from her yet.

Thanks

There are third-party fixes--winsockxpfix is one of them.

The issue occurs because of the removal of spyware, not so much the presence
of Microsoft Antispyware. Removing Microsoft Antispyware won't fix it.
