recovering corrupted data

I have a user who, while PPT was saving his slide show to
a USB stick drive, pulled the stick off his laptop, and
now (surprise, surprise) when he tries to open the file,
he gets an error saying the file is corrupted. Are there
any utilities out there designed to try to fix this
problem?

Well, first of all, tell your user to never save to removable media. Always
save to the hard drive and then move a copy to the removable media.

I knew that would happen to someone eventually. Rich, you should have your

http://tinyurl.com/6jh24 (by yours truly). I actually mentioned this exact
scenario.

That is, of course, in addition to the link Sonia provided. I know that
trying to retrieve the thing is most important to the user right now.
