Recovered Messages Folders

I have seen related threads on Recovered Messages but none directly related
to my problem.

I am using Vista Home Premium with Windows Mail V6.0.6000.16383

My problem started when I imported some backup folders/messages using the
Import Utility in WM. Immediately after the import I noted an auto generated
folder called Recovered Messages and sub-folders of inbox, sent, recovered
messages M29, imported folder. Originally the inbox and sent folders had most
but not all of my backed up messaged. In addition 3 sub message folders
while showing numerous messages show either a message that they cannot be
read or regardless of which message is read they all show the same
information.

In closing down and restarting WM and second identical set of folders and
sub folders were created as above but new messages not previously listed
above appeared.

All messages were moved from the Recovered Messages folder including the
unreadable ones. All messages and folders in the Recovered Messages folder
were deleted as well as the Recovered Messages folder itself.

If WM is left active long enough (meaning >10 minutes the Recovered Messages
folder regenerates itself and now has the sub-folders of inbox, sent,
imported messages, recovered messages M29 but all are empty. Also every time
WM is restarted the Recovered Messages Folder along with the other empty
folders are regenerated with the only difference being the date and time with
the main folder Recovered Messages.

Using explorer I find WM in C:\Program Files\Windows Mail but not the
various versions of the Recovered Messages folders and sub-folders.

What should be my next steps to eliminate this annoyany action and recover
full use of WM?

My preference is to upgrade and get ahead of all WM issues. However, it
seems Windows Live Mail (WLM) is only WEB based fronting hotmail? Is this
correct or can I sent up WLM as I could for Outlook Express or in my case WM?

WLM is a full-featured POP/IMAP client, as well as a news reader,
so it does everything WM does, plus Hotmail access.
It will automatically import your WM accounts, emails, and settings.
You may have to tell it to import Contacts, but that is easily done.

But will upgrading to WLM recover the messages that are now unreadable (ie
the ones where whichever email you open in a subfolder you get the same
message) or do I need to do something to recover these messages first

I'm not at all certain whether WLM will recover those unreadable
messages, but it is worth a try. If it doesn't, you still have the WM
data files available for further recovery attempts. It's not like you
are burning the bridges behind you. :-)

Thanks; I'll give it a try. Any advice on where to look for advice on how to
attempt recovery of the messages?

Sorry, I've never seen a tutorial on how to recover missing or mangled messages.
